” In 1977, poetry was still writing and reading” – Tom Konyves
Videopoetry as a term sounds easy and seems to fit to that idea what we get when seeing a videopoem. I don’t see it that simple. Videopeotry must be understood only as a term (and nothing more) for a kind of poetry that has existed only a few decades now.
It’s easier to describe what videopoetry is not. It’s not soundpoetry, it’s not written poetry and it’s not a video of something or a piece of videoart although at the same time it’s all of these.
But for me the difference starts at the very point when deciding to make a videopoem. For me it always starts from a handwritten poem. This doesn’t mean that the poem stays as it is written; it changes during the process; the handwritten poem is just the starting point.
Captured video changes the poem in relation to itself and music or sounds changes the poem etc. As Lionel Kearns said, "Poetry is tricking words into saying something.” This is exactly where videopoets possibilities grow up to enormous lenght!
”The object is to create a work which uses poetry in a new medium to create a new kind of poetic experience” – Tom Konyves
Poetry altogether is changing. Poets all over the world has a lot of new possibilities from working more closely together to using the technological advances we now have. Making videopoetry is just my way to be part of this. Being a poet means to search new ways to understand language, and for me more importantly ;how language is created. All this means that one must always be open to whatever one sees or feels… it’s nothing more than that.
